22 EXECUTIVE BILL 117 January 24, 1985 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Arts & Sciences: Brian Wheeler John Francis Jill Hanauer Lori Monkarsh Daniel Sladek David Aragon Kristina Detjen John Welch Vicki Ortega & Paul Weissmann AAUS Coordinator: Cary A. Filsinger Tri-Executives: Vice Pres. Pro-Temp Rep.-at-large: Authored by: A BILL BILL SUMMARY Allocates an amount not to exceed $8508.08 from Central Reserve to fund the first of two key-note speakers: Coretta Scott King and to finance the advertising of all speakers and events to take place throughout the conference. BILL HISTORY UCSU has in the past year spent money on the following valuable and often essential events and projects: $12,000 to fund the UCSU DIMENSION for the 198485 fiscal year, $15,500 towards the Alexander Haig event last spring $1,600 for a student book exchange, $13,000 to assist in the funding of an AIESEC Conference last spring, $1,375 to attend AAUS Conference in North Carolina, $1,100 for a drunk driving brochure, $650.00 on a differential tuition drive, $1,370 on Take Back the Night advertising, $1,115.00 for a Legislator's Day, $1,710 to attend a USSA Conference and another $760.00 to join the organization on a one-year trial basis. While all of these projects are worthwhile, the AAUS Conference is probably the single event which benefits the largest group of people, certainly all of the students on the CU, Boulder campus. Indeed, it encompasses all of the events and/or projects listed above in one way or another. AAUS's non-partisan position lends to this conference a very special and unique attractiveness- all students invited and more inclined to participate in the conference. All students will benefit. Education is what we are all about education is what this conference is all about. Stengthening student governments in their efforts to bring increased attention to the importance of higher education in our society, on both a local and national level. The conference will be an opportunity for UCSU and students everywhere to voice their concerns and support for higher education. The timing for UCSU is ideal; UCSU will be a vocal point across the state - and the message will reach our state legislators! Page 2 - 22 Executive Bill 117 The unique grouping of speakers will also assist us in our efforts. Indeed, the publicity they will give the conference may be the single most important factor, spreading and emphasizing the goals of the conference and students everywhere. They will increase tremendously, the publicity the conference receives. The speakers, too, will increase the participation of student leaders in the conference. The workshops offered are both crucial to the conference and to the communication link between students. Without discounts and special 'deals', the cost of this conference would exceed an estimated $52,000. Financing efforts will continue. Still, to enable conference planning to proceed without delay, the requested UCSU financing is necessary (approximately $9,500 between 22EB 117 and 22EB /18).
