December 11, 1986 26 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION 105 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representatives-at-Large Vice President Pro-Tempore Tri-Executives President Pro-Tempore Representatives-at-Large Jeff Stephens Drew Bolin Debbie Austin Dave Aragon Patrice Hauptman John Roberts Dean Miller Ann-Margaret Gallegos Kevin Jacobs John Ramos Christine Drylie Timber Notestine Stacey Fix Catherine Bedell Education Rep Engineering Rep Environmental Design Rep Arts & Sciences Rep Graduate/Special Journalism Rep Music Rep Authored by: Representatives-at-Large Tri-Executive Jeff Stephens Drew Bolin Patrice Hauptman A RESOLUTION WHEREAS: It is no secret that the tuition hikes of anywhere from 92% to 119% at CU over the last six years have put the pinch on many students, regardless of who pays their tuition; and, WHEREAS: It is the concern of many in the University community that many students or prospective students are being "priced out of the market" by these steep increases--highlighted by jumps of 10.1-25% last year. CU is without a doubt becoming an elitist institution--as shown by a high percentage of out-of-state students and an ever decreasing minority student population. This trend is detrimental to the diversity of CU, and therefore the academic atmosphere of the University; and, WHEREAS: Another major concern is that CU is becoming too dependent upon tuition dollars; over 1/3 of the total bill is funded by tuition, a figure even the CU Administration figures to be too high; and, WHEREAS: With all this in mind, it is imperative that UCSU join with the students of CU in calling for a tuition freeze for 1987-88, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: UCSU recognizes the need for academic excellence and quality services. However, this institution of higher education has become far too tuition-dependent. #• 26 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION 11105 -Page 2 SECTION 2: Therefore, we unequivocally support a tuition freeze for 1987-88. SECTION 3: We also support a rollback of all differential tuitions. SECTION 4: This legislation takes effect upon passage.
