29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL BILL 10 September 1, 1988 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representative-at-Large Rob Corry Authored by: AFME Member Kerwin Brook A BILL BILL HISTORY Allie'd Friends for Male Emancipation {AFME) was organized over a year ago in order to promote an awareness of men's issues in both the University and Boulder community. Since that time, we have written letters, spoken in a number of university classes, spoken on radio and cable programs, assisted in the creation of the first CU "Men's Studies" course {to be taught this Spring), and created what we hope will be an annual event, the Men's Conference. Last year's Men's Conference was very successful. Approximately 1000 people attended five events, learning about such diverse men's issues as competition, fatherhood, sexuality, violence and intimacy. Over the past year a number of men have said that they feel the conference was a major turning point in their llves. Articles appeared in the Boulder Camera, the Denver Post, and the Rocky Mountain News as well as the Colorado Daily and Campus Press. Warren Farrell, last year's keynote speaker was interviewed on KOAQ and KNUS radio. Given the tremendous response we received to last year's conference, we have decided to expand the number of events to fifteen, and diversify the range of topics covered to try to attract a wider cross-section of people than may have come last year. To this end, we are asking the UCSU Executive Councll to fund two events, Wednesday night's free movie The Great Santini and Friday night's performance by men's singer/songwriter Geoff Morgan, as well as provide funding for the Conference's advertising. AFME will cover the cost of lodging and food for Mr. Morgan during his ·s tay. We are also asking funding from a number of administrative discretionary accounts, and of course, if we receive any additional funding from those sources, we will return any excess amount to the Exec. Councll. BILL SUMMARY This bill allocates $1,254.80 + GAR to the Allied Friends for Male Emancipation for the 2nd Annual Men's Conference to be held Sept. 26-30.
