A BILL Susie Fairchild Tim Kauffman Dawn Massop Rob Corry Les Lambert Rob Grandtam BILL HISTORY The third annual World Rainforest Week will occur Oct. 9-16, 1988, and the UCSU Environmental Center's Rainforest Action Group will be organizing a full week of activities for both the university and local communities. The purpose of World Rainforest Week is to foster international _awareness of the issue of Global Deforestation by educating and involving people in the movement to save tropical rainforests. ·The R.A.G. will be offering in forma tiona! sessions on campus involving slideshows, videos, local and in vi ted guest speakers, and workshops. The schedule will consist of three such evenings, followed by a keynote evening with 2 speakers, benefit evening with indigenous music and dance performances, and events organized to bring people in to the movement as participants, rather than spectators. R.A.G. members have met and heard both Lehua Lopez and Joshua Karliner at various conferences. Both offer vital and knowledgable insight into the dynamics of Global Deforestation and will add greatly to the scope and content of World Rainforest Week. Lehua Lopez is a native Hawaian and co-founder of the Hilo based Pele Defense Fund. The organization is single-handedly saving various unique but endangered ecosystems on the Big Island, and in· the process serving as the major active group seeking to restore and uphold trational aspects of native Hawaian culture. Her knowledge is wide and valuable: The unique tropical ecology of Hawaian Rainforests, Natural History of the Islands, Native Religious Beliefs, Environmental Effects of modern Society in Hawaii. Joshua Karliner is Policy Director for the Environmental Project on Central America, a project of the Earth Island Institute. He has traveled extensively in Latin America as both participant and organizer of Environmental Conferences amongst members of the scientific, antheolorogic, environmental and developmental organizations in various con tries. He has been published regularly, writing on various aspects of the contemporary socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural effects of American Polley and development in the new world tropics. He is an energetic and informed speaker. Lehua and Joshua will both speak at the keynote event, each offering their individual perspective and knowledge about the Global Rainforest situation. It will be, for many attendees, their first awareness that Tropical Deforestation does 29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL BILL //14 - Page 2 occur in this country, and a deep and thorough presentation of how "First World" Nations fuel much of the cutting in the tropics. They will both guest lecture in various faculties as well, including Religious Studies, Natural Science, Political Science, etc. as appropriate and desired. BILL SUMMARY Allocates $718.00 from Central Reserve to the R.A.G. for two honorariums of $250.00 each, and $218.00 for J. Karliner's air travel to and from Washington, D.C. BE IT ENACTED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: This bill allocates $718.00 + GAR from Central Reserve to fund speakers for Rainforest Week. SECTION 2: A report shall be written pursuant to 24 ECB 4.
