29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL BILL U19 September 20, 1988 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representatives-at-Large Rob Corry Paul Young J. W. Slone Jr. Authored by: Representatives-at-Large Paul Young Rob Corry A BILL BILL HISTORY Diverse representation is the key to an effective legislative branch. There are many forms of diversity, including economic. Executive Council strives to promote diversity, and has beeh generally successful. However, a main area of diversity has been neglected, that of economics. Many students must find outside employment to facilitate their education. This effectively eliminates one potential group from gaining representation. The position of Representative-at-Large requires a sizeable time commitment. A working student would find this, combined with job and school, unfeasible. Paying representatives a monthly salary is the first step to gaining more economic diversity on Executive Council, as well as acquiring numerous other advantages. Student interest in UCSU would be enhanced, as students are inspired to ensure accountability of their paid representatives. Conversely, representatives would feel a stronger sense of responsibility if their involvement exceeds a volunteer basis. BILL SUMMARY This bill provides a monthly salary of $100 to be paid to Representatives-at-Large. BE IT ENACTED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: The following addition be made to the Bylaws of UCSU: "Article III Section D Salaries Representative-at-Large salaries shall be established in the amount of $100 per full month served during regular school session." SECTION 2: ---- Upon passage, this article will be inserted into the UCSU Bylaws immediately after the fall 1988 elections. 0808199708081997 9/22/88- FAILED- EXECUTIVE COUNCIL- 1st READING- 2-12-3
