BILL HISTORY
Pedro Archuleta is a representative of the indigenous people of Tierra Amarilla,
New Mexico in their struggle to come to terms with the land rights question in New
Mexico and the entire southwestern U.S.
Tierra Amarilla is right across the Colorado border in an area which was once
Mexico. The land in dispute was given to the ancestors of the community as a
collective land grant by the Mexican government. The recent conflict began when
the land was fraudulently sold to a developing company by a man whose ancestors
had never been part of that community.
P~dro Archuleta has been heavily involved with the struggle and is very familiar
with the history of the area and with the history of indigenous people in the
Southwest. Most of this history and culture does not appear in the history books or
in the general experience of most C.U. students. Bringing this oral historian will
provide a form of communication on issues of indigenous peoples that is rarely
available. This kind of exchange could prove inva,Iuable in broadening our
know ledge by focusing on the history, traditions, and conflicts existing in our own
back yards.

BILL SUMMARY
This bill would provide funding of $84-3.95 + GAR from Central Reserve for Pedro
Archuleta to visit CU and speak on Nov. 15th.
BE IN ENACTED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student
Union, THAT:
SECTION 1:

An amount no·t to exceed $84-3.95 + GAR from Central
Reserve shall be allocated to fund Pedro Archuleta's
visit to CU.

SECTION 2:

A written report will be submitted pursuant to 24- ECB lilt.

SECTION 3:

This bill shall take effect upon passage.
