I~ 29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL BILL 09 September 1, 1988 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Law School Representative Representative-at-Large Vicky Ortega Sean Murphy Authored by: WLC member Nita Benetin A BILL BILL HISTORY The members of the University of Colorado Women's Law Caucus, Hispanic Law Caucus, and Womens Study Program present a Conference on the Advancement of Women featuring Ellie Smeal, former president of NOW and Fund for the Feminist Majority. We ask for your support. This is an opportunity for the University of Colorado to bring a nationally acclaimed figure to the Boulder campus to illustrate CU's continuing commitment to the advancement of heightened awareness of opportunities open to women, encourage women to pursue positions of power through higher education and political office. Ellie Smeal is recognized and supported both nationally and locally. The World Almanac for 1983 chose her as the fourth most influential woman in the United States and was named by Time Magazine as one of the "50 Faces for America's Future". President Carter appointed her to Presidential Com missions concerned with International Women's Year and the White House Conference on the Family. Ellie Smeal's local supporters include Pat Schroeder, Martha Ezzard, Dottie Lamm, and Dorothy Rupert. In view of Ms. Smeal's prominence and credentials, $2,000 + GAR is a reasonable amount for UCSU Ex-e cutive Council to invest in this Conference. The Women's Law Caucus has been working on fundraising for this event throughout the summer and presently has $900 committed from law -firms, organizations and members of ยท the community. Letters have been sent to over 60 law firms and businesses asking for support and funding. The firm of Gorsuch and Kirgis have donated their office resources and have already typed letters and made community contacts. The Colorado Women's Bar and Colorado's NOW chapter has offered support and resources including money, mailing lists. A committee is working to make this a statewide event and various undergraduate .groups are being contacted and asked for their support. This effort will go into full swing in early September when the students return for the fall semester. Dean Nichole has been contacted and asked for support. We are also gathering faculty support. BILL SUMMARY This Bill shall allocate an amount not to exceed $2,000 plus GAR to the Conference on the Advancement of Women. BE IT ENACTED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: 29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL BILL //9- Page 2 SECTION 1: UCSU is interested in bringing about an awareness of opportunities open to women through higher education. SECTION 2: An amount not to exceed $2,000 plus GAR shall be allocated from Central Reserve to provide an honorarium for Eleanor Smeal, keynote speaker for the conference on the advancement of women. SECTION 3: A written report shall be submitted pursuant to 24 ECB 1/4.
