October 20, 1988 29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION 105 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Represen ta ti ve-a t-Large Business Representative Rob Corry Kurt Wedgewood Authored by: Representative-at-Large A RESOLUTION Rob Corry WHEREAS: Byron R. "Whizzer" White is one of CU's most eminent alumni. A Rhodes Scholar, and member of Phi Beta Kappa, "Whizzer" graduated with honors from CU in 1938. He was a two-time All-American halfback for the Buffalos, as well as student body President. After CU, he went on to Oxford University in England, then Yale Law School. He had brief stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detriot Lions professional football teams. "Whizzer" served his country in World War II as a Naval Intelligence Officer in the Pacific Theater, and earned two bronze stars during his tour of duty. He clerked for the U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice after law school, then worked for the Denver law firm of Lewis, Grant, and Davis until 1960. He then became Deputy Attorney General in 1961, and was appointed by President John F. Kennedy to the United States Supreme Court in 1962. An athlete, scholar, and citizen, his impressive list of acheivements before and after graduation serves as an inspiration to CU students; past, present, and future. WHEREAS: We, the students of the University, suggest the building previously known as Nichols Hall be named Whizzer Hall, after Byron R. "Whizzer" White. We choose his nickname over his formal name because it is his special link to the University of Colorado. He was known as Whizzer while he was here, thus the name choice is more appropiate and specific to CU. Whizzer Hall is a distinctive, original name, unique enough so that future generations of CU students, in the spirit of inquiry, will discover on their own the great human being after which their hall is named. Students will be proud to reside in a dorimi tory bearing his namesake. WHEREAS: It has been almost a year since the name of Nichols was stripped from the building, which was largely a result of student action. Therefore, the students should have input in the renaming as well. The building has gone without a name for too long. 29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION 11105- Page 2 BE IT RESOLVED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: We, the students of the University of Colorado -Boulder, suggest the building previously known as Nichols Hall be named Whizzer Hall, after Byron R. SECTION 2: Upon passage, the UCSU Publicity Director will inform the CU Board of Regents, President, Chancellor, Vice-Chancellors, the Boulder Campus Planning Commission and the BoulderDenver media of the students' resolution. SECTION 3: Passage of this resolution in no way restricts any student or group of students from suggesting another name for the building. SECTION 4: This resolution takes effect upon passage. 10/20/88 - WITHDRAWN - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
