Both the Arapahoe and Cheyenne peoples gave up their lives and their land for this University as well as for this town of people. As of today there are no Native American people commemorated on this campus. The University tells us that we cannot name that Hall after a person who did not contribute in some way to this University, yet we have a cafeteria in the UMC which is named after a cannibal - Alferd E. Packer. We strongly believe that Native Americans should be commemorated on this campus, as it is long overdue. We have taken time to speak with prominant members of the Native American community, including: Native American Rights Fund, the Board of Directors of the Denver Indian Center, Wallace CoffeyExecutive Director of the Denver Indian Center, the Parent Advisory Board Committee for Title IV Indian Education, Chiefs of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe Tribes. Once again we have their continued support in our struggle for the renaming of this Hall, as we once had your support. We hope that you will continue to support us. -.. 29 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION - Page 2 At this time we, the Oyate Indian Club and the 21 student groups supporting us, recommend that the Hall be named CHEYENNE-ARAPAHOE HALL. We feel that these people gave up their lives and their land which is perhaps the most valuable contribution one can give. The land is our mother and she is sacred. We all come from her no matter what color we are: red, black, brown, white or yellow. No deed could be as valuable as the contribution of this part of Mother Earth that this University is built on. Once again, we are asking for your understanding and your support. We do not feel that we are asking for too much-we are only asking for justice and what is right. WHEREAS: UCSU has supported Oyate Indian Club in their endeavors to rename Nichols Hall and UCSU has always deferred the important decisions in this rna tter to Oya te Indian Club and Oya te Indian Club and the other sponsors of this resolution support only an Indian name or concept. This campus would not have been built on this land if the Cheyenne and Araphoe tribes had not given up their land and No students would be at CU getting an education if it were not for the sacrifice of these Native American people and Oya te and the 21 supporting student groups still believe that the Hall should be named in commeration of Native Americans, THEREFORE, WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: BE IT RESOLVED by the Executive Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: UCSU endorses CHEYENNE-ARAPAHOE HALL in place of Nichols Hall. SECTION 2: UCSU beleives that our decision should be in accordance with that of the Oyate Indian Club because it was the ancestors of some Native American students on this campus who gave their land for the building of CU. 0808199708081997 10720/88 -PASSES -EXECUTIVE COUNCIL - 13-0-2 ~ !31:-- Drew Bolin President Pro-Tempore UCSU Executive Council /;FHIL~ "-'"s\:(·Fairchild UCSU Executive
