McNeill BILL HISTORY Professor Robert N. Thompson will be speaking on Wednesday, April 19, at 7:00pm in Chemistry 140. His topic will be "Canadian-American Relations". Robert N. Thompson is a Canadian with a unique record of service in many parts of the world. Educated in both Canada and the United States, his professional specialization is in education administration and business administration. During the war, Dr. Thompson served with the Canadian Air Force, first with the Commonwealth Air Training Scheme and later with the Ethiopian Air Force. Remaining in Africa after the war for fifteen years, Dr. Thompson served the Ethiopian Government for seven years as High School Headmaster, Superintendent of Schools, and Director of Educa tlon, as well as Advisor in Foreign Affairs. In 19 52 he became Chairman of the Education Committee for East Africa under the Sudan Interior Mission, continuing as a Consultant/ Advisor on Foreign Affairs with the Government of Ethiopia. Dr. Thompson returned to Canada in 1959 and entered Canadian politics, serving until the 1972 election as Member of Parliament for the electoral district of Red Deer, Alberta. In 1964, he assisted in mediating the end of the Congo Civil War and in 1969-70 headed Canadian missions to Nigeria at the close of the Biafran Civil War. He has vlsi ted · the cquntries of South East Asia numerous times during and after the Vietnam War. He has served with various political delegations to the U.S.C., Overseas, and to the U.N. and N.A.T.O. His ten years as a Member of the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs and Defence took him to all Canadian defence establishments in Europe, Canada and the U.S.A. He .is personally familiar with theproblems and politics of the Third World. In April 197 3, Dr. Thompson led a major Canadian delegation to Communist China. Since 1967 he has served as President of the Freedom Council of Canada, participating annually in Interna tiona! Conferences in Europe, North America and Africa. In 1962, as a long time friend of Dr. Bob Pierce, he became the founder and Chairman of the Board of World Vision of Canada. In 1972, he was appointed VicePresident of the Samaritan's Purse in Canada, an office he continues to hold. I From 1967-72, Dr. Thompson was visiting Professor of Political Science at Waterloo Lutheran Univeristy. He is a member of Gideons International, and Rotary International, presently serves on a number of International Mission Boards and on the Board of Governors of several colleges. Chambers of commerce~ When Dr. Thompson retired from political service in 1972 to take up the work of Christian higher education at what is now Trinity Western University, Langley, British Columbia, President and Professor of Political Science. Qr. Thompson is widely accepted in the. United States and Canada as a lecturer at . colleges, professional conventions,_and service clubs on international affairs, education, missions and business management. In 1988 he accepted the position of C·. E.O. of the Mardel lnterna tiona I Trading Corporation. In Janauary 1989 he was appointed Acting Chairman of the Pacific Basin Universl ties Council.
