Over the past eleven years the conference has featured workshops on leadership, organizational development, academic survival skills and more. Nationally prominent Black speakers have become a highlight of the conference. The membership of the Big Eight Council is comprised primarily of undergraduate and graduate students at the eight universities that make up the Big Eight Athletic Conference. Though the Big Eight Council is the principal sponsor and coordinator of the leadership conference, students from colleges and universiti.e s around the nation will be represented this year. The Big Eight Council on Black Student Government serves as a forum for addressing problems, concerns and issues of Black students attending the predominately white universities of the Big Eight Athletic Conference. The primary purpose of this conference is to build leadership & communication skills; promote academic success & political awareness; reinforce the educational & cultural development of Black scholars; promote a better understanding & greater exposure of African & African-American culture at predominately white institutions like CU. The University of Colorado is the proud host of this years conference. The conference will include nationally prominent Black speakers, workshops, a career fair, & exhibition, a Black cultural fair, the Ninth Annual Black Greek Stompdown and a Gospel Extravaganza. The lectures and workshops will include appearances by Dr. Ruth Love, Julian Bond, Congressman Walter E. Fauntroy, Dr. Harry Edwards, among others. The conference will be held February 16-19 and all activities are open to everyone interested (limited by space availability). BILL SUMMARY This bill will provide funding of $4639.30 + GAR from Central Reserve for the Big Eight Conference to be held February 16-19, 1989. f 30 EXECUTIVE BILL /16 - Page 2 . BE IT ENACTED by the Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: An amount not to exceed $4639.30 + GAR from Central Reserve shall be allocated to fund the Big Eight Con f. SECTION 2: Subsequent to the Event an oral report will be presented to legislative council.
