-------.. 30 EXECUTIVE BILL 1/7 February 23, 1989 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Authored by: Law Representative Chris Drummond Susie Fairchild Tim Kauffman Vicky Ortega Oya te Member BJ WarClub Tri-Executives A BILL BILL HISTORY Since the early 70's the Oyate Indian Club at the University of Colorado-Boulder has traditionally staged an annual "Indian Awareness Week". This event has come to represent an annual focal point of Native American community pride and cultural activity in the Boulder area. There have been a number of variations and levels of activity associated with the Native American Awareness Week over the years. The last Indian Week was held in April, 1988 and consisted of a day of prominent Indian speakers and a Sunday Pow-wow. This year, the Oyate Indian Club will be sponsoring its Native American Awareness Week on March 20-23. The Week will end its campus-held activities on Thursday, March 23 because Spring Break starts Friday, March 24 and people will be leaving Boulder for a week's vacation. The purpose of Native American Awareness Week is not only to provide students with a unique cultural experience, but also to provide an opportunity for the expansion and improvement of relations within the culturally and ethnically diverse student population and members of the community of Boulder. The driving force behind this week is the need to expand student and community awareness of American Indian culture and situation. We feel that participation in this event promotes respect and understanding of cultural and lifestyle differences. Our main emphasis this year is the theme of education. Entertainment will be featured. Speaking and entertainment presentations have been scheduled between 6-10 pm so as to not interfer with most classes and jobs.
