W. Slone BILL HISTORY Last year UCSU sent one student representative, two student group members and one tri-executive to the second annual Martin Luther King Conference. This year the Martin Luther King Jr. conference will be held from Jan. 13 until Jan. 16. The theme of the conference is Empowerment through Nonviolence. The conference was begun in an attempt to honor the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. in an actionoriented manner vs. leaving king as a simple memory. Students from across the U.S. will be participating in the conference. Some of the objectives include learning how to combat institutionalized racism in a productive way, to spread King's idea of non-violent social change, and to participate in a number of workshops to learn about the different issues dealing with racism and its effects around the world. Martin Luther King, Jr. set and an example for the rest of the world to follow. Students were some principle actors who followed King's call in the sixties and seventies. It is up to the eighties to carry out King's dream of culturally diverse and sentitive society, a society in which all people are active and accepted participants. King had a dream, we have a responsibility, let's work together to keep young America aliv·e. BILL SUMMARY This bill shall allocate an amount not to exceed $636.00 plus GAR in order to fund a total of two students to the Martin Luther King, Jr. conference in Atlanta, GA from Jan. 13-16.
