A repressive government supported by the U.S. has been directed by the rich and military while the people continue to suffer. The University of El Salvador has been the object of much of the government repression. On December 24th, 1988, the University Biology building was destroyed by 3 bombs, which killed a University custodian. The day after the bombing, the University was surrounded by troops from the 1st Infantry Brigade. The military are searching cars as well as professors and students as they enter and leave the Universi.t y. This is the most current example of the repression, it proceeds countless past examples of harrassment and suspension of rights by the military government of El Salvador. AGEUS (General -Association of Salvadoran Students and FERS (The Salvadoran Student Revolutionary Front) were both formed by students to try to end the repression toward the University. Both groups are working for University autonomy and having full control of the University budget. They are working for basic necessities of the University books, supplies, furniture, etc ••• The student groups are also trying to have outreach with the community. They are involved in tutoring in poor neighborhoods, starting literacy campaigns in the country side, and setting up free health clinics. Salomon Estrada and Rene Hernandez are representatives of FERS and AGEUS, respectively. They are on tour in the U.S. to inform the U.S. public and the University community of the crisis in El Salvador, in general, and of Salvadoran students, specifically.
