30 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL 1/32 March 2, 1989 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representative-at-Large · Vicky Powell Authored by: Campus Men's Caucus Members Kerwin Brook Dave Edrich Meyer Weitzman A BILL BILL HISTORY Since the early 70's, the women's movement and a complimentary men's movement have raised issues regarding gender and power relations in society. For the past two years the Rocky Mountain Men's Conference has been a catalyst for addressing men's issues. Some areas which have been explored include "Men and Feminism", "Sex and Intimacy", and "Fatherhood". While the issue of "Men and Violence" has been touched upon in the Conference, we have decided to create a singularly focused event upon the topic. Therefore, we are organizing what we hope will be an annual event which will compliment the Men's Conference: a men's march against violence. On Friday, April 28th, we will sponsor a panel discussion which will 'include such topics as racial violence, gay bashing, domestic violence and violence in the media. Then on Saturday morning, we will have two discussion sessions each involving 6 different topics; this will enable participants to ,engage more fully and focus more directly on areas of personal interest. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, men are welcome to join the march which will begin by the football stadium· and ROTC offices and end on the Boulder Courthouse Lawn. During this time, women will be encoura-ged to participate in a seperate discussion occuring on the Courthouse Lawn. The end of the march will culminate in a gender unification which will hopefully provide a sense of solidarity for all participants. Our intent in sponsoring these events is to raise community awareness and allow participants the unique opportunity address such issues as sexual abuse of boys, fraternity hazing, military violence, violence in sports as well as feminist concerns of wife-abuse and rape. In the sense that our focus is on both men as peretra tors as well as victims of violence, we feel this event compliments the women's Take Back the Night march. The title of our event is "Breaking the Silence; Men Confronting Violence". We hope to gain your support in making this a success.
