In order to further these goals, CWO wishes to bring Jane Elliot to speak on prejudice in society in all forms: racism, sexism, homophobia, and ageism. Jane Elliot has become nationally known after her activism in the 1960's aft~r the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ms. Elliot was a schoolteacher in Iowa at this time, and she conducted an experiment by dividing her third grade class between blue-eyed and brown-eyed children. She wanted the children to experience discrlrnina tion first-hand and to raise awareness in their small town community. The experiment proved to be extremely powerful, and it was made into two films: "Eye of the Storm" and "A Class Divided". Additionally, Ms. Elliot has appeared on the Donahue and Oprah Winfrey shows. At C U, Ms. Elliot plans to discuss her experiences, show a 20 minute film, and focus on the inequalities in society, particularly how inequalities are manifested in the educational system. She spoke to Mortar Board at CU last month, and, as members can attest, she is a dynamic, powerful, and memorable speaker. BILL SUMMARY This bill would provide funding of $1512.95 +GAR for Jane Elliot to visit CU and speak; Wednesday, April 5th, 7 -9pm in Duane Physics G020. BE IT ENACTED by the Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: An amount not to exceed $1512.95 shall be allocated from Central Reserve to fund an honorarium and advertising for Jane Elliot to speak at CU.
