....______ 30 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL /148 March 16, 1989 I UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Julie O'Brian Representative-at-Large Marcie Fuller Authored by: A BILL BILL HISTORY The Campus Women's Organization was founded in January 1989 by Kate Donnalen and Wendy Wyman, in affiliation with the National Organization for Women. Donnalen and Wyman saw the need for a moderate women's organization at the university level to support the needs of university women and to work for women's rights and equality in the campus sphere. Since its origination, the CWO has facilitated a petition and post card drive in favor of the option of choice concerning the issue of abortion. An end date of Friday, March 1'7, 1989 has been determined as the point at which all completed petitions and post cards will be mailed to the National Abortion Rights Action League who will then distribute those materials throughout the government. The CWO also organized a patient escort training seminar with Boulder Valley Women's Health Center February 23, 1989 to train volunteer's to escort patients into the clinic during demonstrations · and picketing. The CWO also provides a supportive forum for women and men to work for women's rights and equality. Currently, the CWO is organizing a 'march for choice' on Sunday, April 9, 1989 in Boulder to coincide with the national 'March for Women's Equality/Women's Lives' in Washinton, D.C. organized by the National chapter of .NOW on the same day. Since reproductive freedom is central to the struggle for women's equal rights and that freedom has become threatened by the Supreme Courts agreement to hear the Missouri case in June of 198 9, the result of which could be an overturning of the 197 3 decision of Roe vs. Wade to make abortion legal, the CWO sees the 'march for choice' here in Boulder in conjunction .with the march in Washington as a opportunity to spread awareness about this issue so vital to the lives of all women. The march in Boulder will assemble at the fountain area of the University of Colorado at 12 noon. Two speakers will address the crowd on the necessity of choice for approximately 30 min. Following the speakers, there will be a group march North down Broadway to the Pearl Street downtown mall. The final destination of the march is the Boulder Courthouse lawn where and two more speakers will address the crowd on the issue of choice lasting approximately 30 min. Three of the four persons who will speak at the Boulder April 9th march have been confirmed. They are Leslie Durgin, Martha Ezzard, and Jana Mendez. The crowd will disperse from the courthouse lawn. A training session to instruc.t mediators in conflict resolution and crowd control has been set up with the Boulder Peace Center for Thursday, March 23, 1989. All precautions are being taken to insure that this event will run smoothly, safe and be an empowering experience for all who attend.
