Every two years, the fraternity holds a national convention not only to decide the important issues of the day, but also to share their concepts of the Fraternity through informalgatherings held throughout the three-day meeting. The convention's legislative body decides on all proposed amendments to our bylaws, rituals, and so forth. The delegates also elect our National Board of Officers • . This year our chapter, Gamma Theta, is co-sponsoring the event and it is essential that . we send as many representatives as possible. The convention begins December 27th and lasts through the 30th, a 24 hour a day extravaganza. As of now, we are expecting approximately 35 members of our chapter to attend. The registration fees per person are $30, plus a $40 banquet fee. The primary expense will be hotel accommodations at $11 per person per night for four nights, bringing the cost to $114 per person. We are expecting to make a least $2,000 this semester in fund raising to help fund the event and are therefore asking UCSU to pay for the banquet and registration fees, leaving Alpha Phi Omega to pay for the hotel accomoda tions. In February 1988, the University of Michigan Law School hosted the· first ever conference fo law students nation wide. It was a great success and the level of enthusiasm was very high. Approximately 150 law students from 50 law schools attended the event; four CU environmental law society students attneded. The purpose of NAELS is to maintain a national network of students interested in the fields of environmental and naturaL resources law. To further this purpose, CU was unanimously chosen to host the 1989 conference and the University of South Carolina was selected to publish a na tiona! newsletter. In addition to focusing on careers in environmental law, the conference features many nationally known scholars and advocates who participate in workshops on contempora-ry issues in environmental law. The conference will be hosted by the CU environmental law society and will take place on January 26-28, 1989. CU ELS anticipates that from 200-300 law students from 75-100 law schools will attend, as well as 150-200 members of the general public. With the exception of a charge for meals, there will be no admission for any of the conference events. (Law students from other schools will each pay a $20 registration fee.) Stewart Udall, secretary of the Interior under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, will be the keynote speaker on Friday morning. In addition to Mr. Udall, the conference will feature approximately 16 other prominent speakers from the private, government and public i.1terest sectors. Each speaker will speak briefly about themselves (i.e. education, work experience etc.) and then will participate in one of four workshops. Workshop topics will be Hazardous Waste, Water Rights and Water Quality, Pulbic Lands, and Global Environmental Issues. All of the speakers, including Mr. Udall, will return on Friday evening in order to participate in an open panel/debate. All events will take place in the UMC and will be open to the Public. The CU Law School is nationally recognized as being one of the top law schools in environmental/natural resources law. This conference provides a perfect opportunity to build upon the school's reputation and to enhance its ability c • 30 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL //8 - Page 2 to attract high quality faculty and students.
