August 3, 198 9 31 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL 013 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representative-at-Large Arts & Sciences Representative Rick Ball Kurt Colburn Authored by: Representative-at-Large Student Pugwash member A BILL Rick Ball Mark O'black BILL HISTORY Student Pugwash USA is a non-profit educational organization devoted to improving students' awareness and understanding of the ethical and social dimensions of decisions concerning science and technology. During the spring of 1989 members of the local chapter helped to organize a successful international conference at C U Boulder titled "New Challenges Posed by Global Interdependence". It is our hope to focus the energy and enthusiasm genera ted by the conference into a productive local chapter. To this end, the national Student Pugwash office is holding a chapter organizing workshop in Maryland from Aug. 18th through the 21st. The aim of the workshop is to prepare student delegates to more effectively organize and implement plans for local events, as well as to engender the constructive exchange of ideas through group discussion. The delegate will return to CU and assist in chapter activities which will benefit the entire University. I wish to express my thanks to UCSU for providing me with air transportation to the 1989 Student Pugwash Chapter Organizing Workshop. I hope that any new skills I may have acquired there can be put to use to benefit Student Pugwash and the goals of UCSU. The 1989 Chapter Organizing Workshop was a inspiring event that brought together 50 students from around the country, all committed to socially responsible action. The organizers of the event put on a dynamic conference which challenged the participants to think deeply about personal philosophies regarding such diverse topis as AIDS, bioethics, security, rainforests, and women & minority issues, and cultivated skills such as goal setting, the communication process, brainstorming, and discussion leading. CU Student Pugwash's formative Fall 89 semester took off to a good start with several events to spread the Pugwash ideology, socially responsible decision making in science and technology related fields. For example, Pugwash held a discussion with Jerrold Krenz entitled The Technological Imperatives Behind The Arms Race, as well as a round table discussion entitled THE HEAT IS ON: The Green House Effect, Energy and You with Michael Glantz of NCAR, Gene Kersey of the EPA, and Pieter Tans of CIRES. Jeff Peck and Carla Selby attended the National Chapter Meeting in Berkeley, and Rudy Jacob attended a national conference in DC on Global Interdependence and Environmental Concerns. The Spring 90 term promises to be another good semester for Student Pugwash. Our first event will be March 1st, a round table and video presentation on the WIPP. Future ideas for the semester include a recruiting campaign, and a discussion on transportation problems and solutions. Again I apologize for not writing to you sooner. If I can answer any further questions or provide any more information, please call me at 492-2525.
