~ 31 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL 1115 August 31, 19&9 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Tri-Executives Engineering Representative Representative-at-Large Authored by: Representative-at-Large Coordinator Dennis Small Third World Center A BILL Alan Ikeya Dawn Massop Tracy Wahl Mike Drews Rick Ball Rick Ball Valerie Embry BILL HISTORY The Dennis Small Third World Center functions as a multicultural center for the CU-Boulder campus. It began its operations in the Spring of 1987 as a project of the Educational Development Program, in collaboration with the Center for Multicultural Counseling and Community Development and primarily serves as a forum for ethnic minority cultural expression. "The Center" aspires to serve the University community in two ways: 1) to enhance diversity within the CU-Boulder community, 2) and to promote positive interaction of ethnic minority students with the academic and social environments of the campus. This center was named after the late Dennis Small- A Black administrator who eagerly contributed his skills in mediation and understanding to help the student body through a time of great political and social conflict on college campuses across the nation. Upon Dennis' leaving, the student body had developed a strong sense of solidarity, purpose and respect for other's differences. The Dennis Small Third World Center upholds this legacy today. The center offers an interesting array of activities, from ethnic art displays to multicultural sensitivity workshops to Native American Pow Wows. The entire university community is encouraged to share and contribute to the presentation and understanding of America's rich ethnic cultures. The Dennis Small Third World Center has expanded in both programming and outreach. We are undergoing extensive physical renovation that will make the center accessible to a larger variety of programming possibilities. We are requesting funds to purchase four (4) lamps and end tables to light one part of the center that has no conventional lighting and will be closed off from the larger room by an accordion wall. This area will be largely used as a small meeting area and tutorial/study area. This way we can hold two events at the same time. We now have more room usage requests than we can honor. Renovations to up this point have been funded by the Office of the Chancellor, Office of the Vice Chancellor, and the UMC director's office. For more information please see the attached improvements budget. 31 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL 1115- Page 2 BILL SUMMARY This bill seeks an allocation of $500.00 + GAR to provide lamps and tables for the Dennis Small Third World Center.
