/ 31 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL i/18 September 14, 1989 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Engineering Representatives Tri-Executive Authored by: Engineering Representative ASME Chairperson A BILL Mike Drews Jeff Miller Dawn Massop Mike Drews Mike O'Shea BILL HISTORY ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) is seeking $356.00 to fund two airline tickets to their Student Leadership Conference in Phoenix, AZ, September 29 - 30, 1989. ASME is an active society with over 50 members who bring lecturers and guest speakers to campus every year. They are also a strong sponsor of the Egg Drop and Professor Dunking during E-Days. They are sending a delegation of 5 students (officers) and one faculty advisor to participate in the conference. The five students compose one design team, which will enter into competitions at the conference. ASME has already purchased their 6 plane tickets because they were able to save $64.00 per ticket by buying them before Sept. 1. They are, however, only requesting funding from UCSU for two tickets to comply with Student Fee Guidelines. Even with UCSU, College of Engineering and School of Mechanical Engineering funds, ASME delegation members will be personally paying the remaining $460.00. BILL SUMMARY This bill allocates $356.00 + GAR for two plane tickets for ASME members to attend their Student Leadership Conference, September 29 & 30, 1989. The conference began Friday evening September 29th with dinner and a guest speaker. The speaker was a mechanical engineering professor from Metropolitan State College who talked about a trip to China he had recently taken during the student demonstrations. The theme of his speech was "do you like China - do you think the students will win?" Following the presentation was an impromptu design contest in which each student was in a group with students from different universities. This promoted students becoming better acquainted with their peers from other schools as well as how to perform effectively in group situations. ( Saturday, September 30th was spent attending a series of meetings which covered topics such as: Professional ethics in industry, how to run voluntary organizations such as ASME, and fund-rasing techniques. All offickrs agreed the conference was a good learning experience as well as an excellent opportunity to meet students from other schools. UCSU can be assured that the funding they supplied ASME with to attend the conference was well spent. Sincerely, (Yl,k 0.
