31 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL 1123 October 5, 1989 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representatives-at-Large Authored by: The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador A BILL Wendy Wyman Charles Ellis BILL HISTORY In the last 10 years in El Salvador over 70,000 Salvadorans have been killed by the military. In 1979 a group of campesinos, students, and workers formed the Farabundo Marti National Leiberation Front in response to the increased governmental repression fo the late 1970's. Jaime Suriano was a medical student at the University of El Salvador in the early 19~0's. It was at this time that he helped co-found the Popular Medical Clinics. Soon after all the founders, except Suriano, were killed by Salvadoran death squads. Suriano then went into hiding and came to the U.S. where he became the FMLN United Nations delegate, and the offical representative of the FMLN in New York City and Las Angeles. Since Oct. 1988 he's also served as the official U.S. representative of the radio station, Faranbundo Marti. BILL SUMMARY This will allocate $905.30 + GAR from Central Reserve to fund a talk by Jaime Suriano on the situation in El Salvador. To be held, Thursday October 26, 1989 at 7:30pm in Guggenheim Auditorium 201. BE IT ENACTED by the Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: An amount not to exceed $905.30 + GAR will be allocated from Central Reserve to fund a talk by Jaime Suriano on the situation in El Salvador.
