31 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL 627 October 12, 1989 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representative-at-Large Julie O'Brian Demetri Ganiaris Lynn Buhlig Garth Harwood Authored by: A BILL 1. BILL HISTORY The purpose of the University Book Store is to act as a non-profit auxiliary service to support the educational and acedemic mission of the University, by providing textbooks, general books, supplies, and equipment to the faculty, students, and staff of the University. 2. The above educa tiona! and acedemic goals are presently being met. 3. Retail sales of a non-acedemic nature are not expanding; however, retail sales are not part of the stated purpose of the University Book Store. 4. An external expansion of the Book Store would deprive this campus of desperately needed bike racks and open space, while also destroying landscaping features and trees. Construction will also coincide with other significant construction projects, causing undue traffic flow problems, noise, fumes, dust, and stress for the University Community. 5. The justified complaints about sufficient handicapped entrance, adequate backpack storage space, overall aesthetic appearance and lighting problems may be improved by internal expansion or remodling. BILL SUMMARY This bill is looking to halt any plans to externally expand the University Book Store. This bill will also halt student fees being used as collateral for the bonds financing this project. BE IT ENACTED by the Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: . SECTION 1: Passage of this bill would put the following referendum question on the Fall 1989 election ballot: "Shall we, the University of Colorado Student Body, approve of the external expansion of the University Book Center in the UMC. Also shall we approve of our student fees to be used as collateral for the bonds financing this project." SECTION 2: Referendum will take effect upon passage. 10/12/89 -Pulled from Legislative Council 0808199708081997
