June 22, 1989 LEGISLAT-IVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION /1102 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representatives-at-Large Adam Kaplin Charles Ellis Julie O'Brian Authored by: Representative-at-Large Adam Kaplin A RESOLUTION WHEREAS: The Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant is within 10 miles of Boulder; and, WHEREAS: Students are concerned about the safety of their air, water, and soil; and, WHEREAS: Rocky F !a ts has a poor record of safety, in January there were a total of 97 safety violations (Denver Post 1/25/89); and, WHEREAS: The FBI, EPA, & DOE have been involved in a massive investigation of the facility; and, WHEREAS: The Environmental Movement in Colorado (including the UCSU Environmental Center) has been warning of the danger at Rocky Flats for years; and, WHEREAS: Most experts agree that a facility such as Rocky Flats should not be located in a centrally populated area. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT: SECTION 1: We demand the immediate cessation of radioactive emissions from Rocky Flats and an accelerated five-year phase out of the facility. SECTION 2: This resolution shall be sent to the Governor, the Colorado Delegation, and alt interested parties in the Colorado Congress. SECTION 3: The Legislative Affairs Commissioner will be directed to make the Rocky Flats issue a priority.
