BILL HISTORY
After the Valdez oil spill on March 24, 1989, there has been a
greater push for corporate environmental responsibility.
In
response to this concern, the Valdez Principles were created by
Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies, a project of
the Social Investment Forum. The Valdez Principles are a list of
ten guidelines to commit corporations to use energy and natural
resources wisely, reduce waste and risk to employees and consumers,
market safe products and services, and place an environmental
advocate on the board of directors and conduct environmental
audits.

In 1989, UCSU Legislative Council passed LCB #50 which created the
Recycling and Resource Management Commission.
It also outlined
that "The Recycling and Resource Management Commission shall be
guided by the Recycling and Resource Management Policy.'' This
policy allows for a price break to bidders with recycled paper over
those without.

It is our desire to extend this same price break to help support
environmentally responsible corporations.
We are asking UCSU
Legislative Council to approve a 10% price preference for Valdez
signatories--similar to the 10% price preference for recycled
paper.
To inform companies of our intentions we are also asking
for $100.00 to assist us in sending all the companies purchased
from during the 1989-90 fiscal year a copy of our resolution along
with a copy of the Valdez Principles.
