october 4, 1990 33 Legislative Council Bill #20 UNIVERSITY op ·· COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representative-at-Large Representative-at-Large Christof Kheim Kimber Johnson Authored by: Assistant Election Comm. Dawn Massop A BILL BILL HISTORY Traditionally, the University of Colorado at Boulder has recognized and hosted Alcohol Awareness Week. This week concentrates on education about alcohol and alcohol abuse, with an emphasis on wellness and awareness rather than prohibition. This year the week is expanding its focus to include other substance abuses; hence, the name of the week is Substance Abuse Awareness Week. This week will take place the week of October 15-19. The week has usually begun with a keynote speaker. This year the week will begin with a debate on the legislation of drugs. The week is being dedicated to the memory of a student, an active participant of UCSU, Jeff Stephens, who died as a result of another individual's alcohol abuse. As the University's Student Union Representatives, you should be wilting to take an active role in educating the campus community about the growing problem of drugs. In assuming the responsibility for assisting with the promotion of this week, UCSU will be taking a positive step towards eliminating, if not definitely confronting, the substance abuse problem in our community. ·Traditionally, UCSU has displayed its support through funding to enable the student body to be aware of the activities of Substance Abuse Awareness Week. With UCSU's funding in 1988, the University of Colorado's Alcohol Awareness ·Week's Program received a certificate of merit on an honorable mention out of over 100 applicants from the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Committee. Funding for the advertisement of this week will help the students get involved in the activities of the week and be aware of this increasing problem.
