July s, 1990 33 Legislative council Bill #4 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO STUDENT UNION Sponsored by: Representative-at-Large Scott Whitaker Authored by: Representative-at-Large Scott Whitaker A BILL. BILL HISTORY The CU Wadokai Karate Club would like to send its first team ever -- to represent -CU at ~ the world championships. The World Wadokai Championships are like the Olympics in a sense in that they are held approximately every four years to promote international sportsmanship and cultural exchange. And because the Wadokai style is the most popular form of traditional karate within Japan and one of the most widely practiced traditional karate styles ·throughout the world, the world championships are also like the Olympics in that they draw people from basically everywhere. For the students in the CU karate club, we see this as a once in a life-time opportunity. Firstly, this year's championships are held in the country of karate's origin, Japan, and we desire to learn something more about this art in the context of Japanese culture. Secondly, because we ·are students, we will be allowed to stay in training halls so our living expenses will be at a minimum. And finally, many of us, especially those of us that are graduate students, will not be as physically ready four years from now as 'we are today. So it is now or never. The cost of sending a team of five students to the world championships is $10, 000. Approximately $5, 000 of this is air fare, and the remaining amount is for accommodations and living expenses for a two week period that includes the championship itself and a series of special karate classes. Japan is apparently very expensive. But being students and poor, we are doing everything we can think of to raise money. We are holding a special karate training clinic of our own from which we will receive donations, a garage sale auction with stuff donated from families associated with the club, and yes, a bakesalejpicnic banquet. The balance the team will divide up evenly and obtain by taking out personal bank loans. BILL SUMMARY This bill would allocate an amount not to exceed $1,952.00 + GAR for 2 round-trip airline tickets to send the CU Wadokai Karate team to Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 1990. BE IT ENACTED by the Legislative council of the University of Colorado student Union, THAT: 33 Legislative council Bill #4 - page 2 SECTION 1: An amount not to exceed $750 + GAR will be allocated from Central Reserve for 2 round-trip tickets to Tokyo, Japan SECTION 2: A written report will be submitted pursuant to 24 ECB #4.
