Since the program began in 1981, higher education communities across the nation have organized state and local activities to focus public and media attention on the mission of higher education and to show the need for increased public and private support for all education. The National Higher Education week 1990 theme, Generating Greatness in Every Generation, celebrates the diversity of students found on today's college campuses. It also celebrates the silver anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and subsequent legislation that has enabled many Americans to . go to college. As Congress prepares to reauthorize the federal higher education legislation in 1991, this National Higher Education Week offers an opportunity to demonstrate higher education's success and the importance of renewed support . for federal student financial aid and other vital programs. The University of Colorado will be celebrating this week by having events throughout the week geared towards higher education. There will be an Admissions and Financial Aid Hotline available for students, parents and others to contact to ask questions on college admissions and financial aid. The hotline is being sponsored by CASE and USA Today. Information about the Higher Education Hotline will be publicized throughout the week. To begin the week the University of Colorado is inviting Shirley Chisholm to be the guest speaker. Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to be elected to the Congress of the United States. She is a woman who is known for her ·political efforts on topics such as compensatory education, Black colleges, American Indians and the poor. She is a dynamic, fighting woman with unswerving belief in her own purpose; to put the needs of her people before political expediency. As a former legislator, Ms. Chisholm can speak of the importance of education and preserving educational rights. The theme of the 1990 conference, Generating Greatness in Every Generation, is a good descriptive phase for Shirley Chisholm, a woman who has strived for I 33 Legislative Council Bill #9 - page 2 greatness throughout her life despite the negative odds of her sex and race. This generation has benefitted from the struggles and successes of her generation. II After 1500 miles, one flat tire, two hours of sleep, and John Neuber's humor, we returned to Boulder at the crack of dawn. We, refers to ten people in a fifteen passanger van, sitting with two computers, two-three-four-no five briefcases, three display boards, five large pizzas, a box of convention bids, three boxes of Presidential materials, and enough luggage for fifteen people to spend four weeks touring Australia. Needless to say, but I will say it, a fifteen passanger van c really means a driver and one navigator. (please sing . . And ~ partridge in a pear tree). The Council of Colleges and Schools funded Kappa Kappa Psi the cost of one 15 passanger van to attend the 1991 Midwest District Convention of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. The van was returned with 13 miles left in the budget, and 45 minutes before the deadline. In terms of business, the convention truly accomplished quite a bit. A new constitution was adopted, written by yours truly. and quite a few things having to do with commissioning a piece of music for bands which a member of Kappa Kappa Psi in Boulder, will be chairing until the 1992 Convention. Boulder did bid to bring the Convention to Boulder in 1992, but the cost of being in Boulder as compared to to cost of being in Lawrence, Kansas. CU was well represented, and was told many times that we will be the power of District in the future. Boulder could not have represented CU as well as have been without the help of CCS. Many thanks to CCS for the financial help. The 1992 Midwest District Convention of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma will be held in Lawrence, Kansas at the KU Campus from March 26 - through March 29, 1992. Submitted by: Tom C.
