A Bill

Bill History

Right now, it is not a requirement of the UCSU Executive, Executive staff, Legislative Council, or justices on the Appellate Court to attend diversity training.  Only classified staff is required to attend diversity training, and most recently, faculty is now required to do it as well.  As representatives of the student body, and liaisons to them, every member of the executive staff, legislative council and the appellate court should have diversity training in order to be able to understand all student issues more effectively.

Bill Summary

This bill will require the UCSU Executive(s), Executive staff, Legislative Council, and the justices on the Appellate Court to attend at least one diversity training session as a requirement to fulfill their duties, during the course of the academic year in which they are currently serving UCSU.

THEREFORE BE IT ENACTED by the Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union, THAT,

Section 1:  All new Legislative Council members will be required to attend a diversity training session no later than eight weeks after they take office, yet all returning members are also encouraged to attend such trainings.  Legislative Council members, who may have replaced a representative as well as permanent proxies, will be required to attend the first Legislative Council diversity training available. The vice president of the legislative council is responsible for planning the session’s date, time, location and all other necessary arrangements for the diversity training by the stipulated deadline.

Section 2:  The executives and executive staff will be required to attend diversity training no later than eight weeks after taking office; The UCSU tri-executives will be responsible for planning the session’s date, time, location and all other necessary arrangements for the diversity training by the stipulated deadline.

Section 3:  All justices on the UCSU appellate court will be required to attend diversity training no later than eight weeks upon taking office. The chief justice of the appellate court is responsible for arranging the session.

Section 4:  It is recommended that diversity training be taken through the Diversity Education Team at the Cultural Unity Center. The people responsible for the arranging of the training (UCSU Tri-Executives, Legislative Council President) can contact the DET through Cleopatra Estrada and DeLaris Carpenter, both counselors in the Cultural Unity Center.

Section 5:  The Diversity training will be carried out using the UCSU definition of diversity as the template for the training. However, it is strongly recommended that the training’s objective be focused on historically under-represented communities.  Diversity will be defined consistent with UCSU’s definition of diversity.  It will also be recognized that diversity of thought and the broader category of ideological diversity (such as privilege/wealth and non-privilege) exist and as such will be addressed in the training but will be used to set a focus on the more primary definitions of traditional diversity training.  It is highly recommended that the ideological diversity take only the aspect of a general discussion.

Section 6:  Upon passage, all current Legislative Council Members and members of the executive staff will be required to attend the first diversity training available.

Section 7:  This bill takes effect upon passage.
