Revision to Election Timeline

____________________________________________________________________________________

Bill History

As the UCSU Election Code stands, candidate petition forms are released five weeks before the election date. Due to the fact that signatures must be collected and verified before the candidate becomes eligible to begin their campaign, it is necessary that petitions be released earlier. This will correct two flaws in our election system. First, it will allow more time for eligible candidates to become aware that the UCSU election process has begun, thus providing higher candidate turnout. Secondly, it will allow candidates more time to formulate their campaign strategies.

Bill Summary

This bill will rewrite § 402(a) of the UCSU Election Code to rectify the election timeline so that candidate petition forms will be available at least six weeks prior to the election. It will also address § 403(a), changing it to reflect a different timeline for write-in candidates to declare candidacy.
